Established in 1967, the High School Summer Theatre Workshop is open to students entering grades 10 through 12. Choose between two workshops based on their focus and your area of interest!

Are you considering applying to SFA? The High School Summer Theatre Workshops can serve as your audition for admittance to the SFA School of Theatre and Dance. Note: The workshops don't serve as your audition for School of Theatre and Dance scholarships.

Workshop A: Acting

Students participating in Workshop A can expect the following experiences:

  • Perform a period/stylized scene and a one-act play directed by award winning guest educators from across the country.
  • Exercise vocal and movement techniques, musical theatre and voice acting.
  • Engage in master classes with School of Theatre and Dance professors and workshops from current SFA theatre education students.
Daily workshop activities:
  • Period/Stylized scene rehearsal
  • Meals in Food Hall 1923
  • Master classes
  • Workshops
  • One-act play rehearsal
  • Fun event (swimming at the Student Recreation Center, movie nights, themed dances and more)
What to bring:

In addition to packing your usual needs for a multi-day stay, you'll need to provide the following:

  • Character shoes
  • One all-black outfit
  • Stage make-up kit
    • Must bring from home. We do not have any available for purchase. 
  • Optional: Snacks 

A detailed packing list will be sent to participants a month in advance.

Workshop B: Designer/Technician

Students participating in Workshop B can expect the following experiences:

  • Serve as a designer or technician for all performances in our brand new, state-of-the-art facilities.
  • Opportunities to work in the scene shop, paint and props shop, costume shop, make-up studio, sound recording studio, light and sound lab, drafting studio and much more!
  • Engage in master classes with School of Theatre and Dance professors and workshops from current SFA theatre education students.
Daily workshop activities:
  • Design sessions
  • Meals in Food Hall 1923
  • Master classes
  • Workshops
  • Technician sessions (construction, painting, programming, light-hanging and more)
  • Fun event (swimming at the Student Recreation Center, movie nights, themed dances and more)
What to bring:

In addition to packing your usual needs for a multi-day stay, you'll need to provide the following:

  • Stage blacks for crew work
  • Paint clothes
  • Stage make-up kit
    • Must bring from home. We do not have any available for purchase. 
  • Optional: Snacks 

A detailed packing list will be sent to participants a month in advance.

Registration information

Online registration is open until June 7.

There is a non-refundable deposit of $400. Once your deposit is processed, you'll receive a receipt with an acceptance letter that provides the next steps. 

  • Cost: $1,400 and includes:
    • on-campus housing
    • meals at Food Hall 1923, located in the Baker Pattillo Student Center
    • workshop supplies
    • and a T-shirt.

Final payment is due by July 14, 2024.

Scholarships

There are limited scholarships available. The High School Workshop is a partial scholarship, and recipients receive the awarded amount applied to the balance on their account. To apply, complete the online form by March 1, 2024.

Audition for School of Theatre and Dance scholarships

Attending the High School Summer Theatre Workshop doesn't serve as your audition for School of Theatre and Dance scholarships. However, you're invited to audition for scholarships at TxETA, Thespians or a Theatre Day at SFA.
