Research and facilities
Our advanced laboratories and specialized research equipment are here to support your studies. Facilities include an East Texas core repository, scanning electron microscope, ground penetrating radars, cesium-vapor magnetometers, ground conductivity meters and an X-ray diffractometer.
Choose your track
Tailor your graduate experience to match your career goals by choosing between the thesis and non-thesis tracks. Both options allow you to include up to six credit hours of approved coursework in other science disciplines.

Requirements for admissions
To be eligible for consideration into the program, you must:
- meet the SFA Graduate School requirements
- achieve a 2.5 GPA or higher overall
- and be one of the following:
- in your final year of undergraduate work
- holding a bachelor’s degree in earth sciences/geologic resources or related field from a regionally accredited college or university
- or have 95 or more semester hours of undergraduate work at SFA and be approved as an overlap student.
If you don't meet the minimum requirements, you may be admitted on a provisional basis under the guidance of the graduate studies advisor.
