Our Master of Arts in psychology is a 36-hour general psychology program built around two things:
- rigorous research training
- and broad exposure to the major subfields of the discipline.
Whether your goal is a doctoral program, to continue toward licensure as a counselor or therapist, or a rewarding career in industry, this degree gives you the foundation to get there.
The science of behavior
You will explore core subfields of psychology while receiving hands-on mentorship in data analysis, ethics and research design. Our curriculum prepares you to make data-driven decisions in any professional setting.
Program tracks
Choose between a thesis or a non-thesis option to align this 36-credit-hour program with your professional goals. Both tracks focus on research and teaching to ensure you gain the practical experience you need to succeed.
Facilities for your research
You’ll have access to more than 20,000 square feet of department space. This includes dedicated research laboratories for human study in fields such as psychophysiology, cognitive, social, developmental and industrial-organizational psychology. You can also use our instructional computing classroom, which provides access to experimental and analytical software.
Apply to the psychology master's program
To be eligible for consideration into the program, you must:
- meet SFA's graduate school requirements
- have completed undergraduate courses in introductory psychology, statistics and research design
- achieve an undergraduate 3.0 GPA or higher overall
- and hold a completed bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited higher institution.
Note: If you don't meet the minimum requirements, you may be admitted on a provisional basis under the guidance of the program coordinator.

- a statement of interest detailing your research or relevant work experience
- and three letters of professional reference.
