The educational diagnostician path in the special education master's program prepares you to manage and deliver special education services within the public school system.
Delivered entirely online with regularly scheduled virtual meetings, the curriculum offers advanced preparation in assessment, instructional strategies, disabilities, and legal frameworks. You'll graduate fully prepared for professional certification, equipped with the knowledge to ensure school compliance with Texas Education Agency, Commissioner of Education, and federal regulations.
State licensing milestones
Texas mandates specific criteria alongside your SFA coursework to secure your standard professional certificate. You will need an official record showing two years of successful classroom teaching experience in an accredited public or private school. Passing scores on the required state certification exams will finalize your credentials.

Mandatory pre-admission screening
Before you pay the nonrefundable graduate school application fee, you should complete our program's pre-admission screening process.
You will upload all your screening materials to a secure digital folder. To get your personal folder invitation, email the department.
Screening checklist
Your digital application folder must include specific professional credentials:
- Permission letter from your district's special education director allowing you to complete your eventual 160-hour campus practicum
- Official teacher service record proving your classroom history
- Valid teaching certifications pulled from the state database
- Three signed letters of recommendation, including two from professional colleagues and one from a long-term community member
- Current professional résumé outlining your career history
- Typed educational philosophy statement exploring your experience with special needs students in a double-spaced document spanning three to five pages
- Five-minute introductory video showcasing your teaching background, certifications, professional strengths and personal motivation to handle a rigorous graduate curriculum
