Dr. Steven H. Bullard

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Dr. Steven H. Bullard was named dean of the Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture at Stephen F. Austin State University by the Board of Regents Tuesday. He will join the faculty July 1.

Bullard comes to SFA from the University of Kentucky, where he currently serves as professor and chair of the department of forestry. Bullard previously held positions at Mississippi State University, serving as interim head of the department of forestry and the department of forest products. He also has served as director of the Institute of Furniture Manufacturing and Management at the Mississippi Forest and Wildlife Research Center.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in forestry and a Master of Science in forest management-economics from Mississippi State University. He earned his doctoral degree in forest management-economics at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

Regents named Dr. James Standley, professor of sociology, as the new dean of graduate studies. Standley also serves as coordinator of the Institutional Accreditation Office and is a former longtime dean at the university.

Sociology Professor Tom Segady was awarded a Regents Professorship for the 2009-1010 academic year. Regents professors receive a medal and a $2,000 grant to support their research efforts.

Additional faculty appointments approved by the Board of Regents Tuesday include: Hope Elisabeth Wilson, assistant professor of elementary education; Christine Bergan, assistant professor of human services; Kevin Kelleher, instructor of sound recording technology; Charles Patterson, assistant professor of modern languages; Jessica A. Sams, assistant professor of English; Paul J. P. Sandul, assistant professor of history; and Bob Schaller, assistant professor of communication.

Dr. Jeana Paul-Urena, associate professor of modern languages, was named chair of the Department of Modern Languages. Other changes of status among the faculty include Elizabeth Gound, from adjunct faculty to visiting instructor of secondary education; Lee W. Payne, from instructor to assistant professor of government; Marty Prince, from adjunct faculty in the College of Fine Arts to library digital project specialist; Petra B. Collyer, from adjunct faculty to assistant professor of biology; Violet Rogers, from dean of the college of business to professor of accounting; and Michael Stroup, from associate dean to interim dean of business.

Staff appointments include: Victoria N. Colla, admissions counselor; Kurt Corbin and Bruce Erik Slaughter, assistant football coaches; Joshua E. Trammell, research specialist; Jamie Nelson Derrick, senior human resources representative; and Robert Wright, executive director of public affairs and marketing.

The appointment of Dewain Ray Robberson, an electrical leadperson in the physical plant, as mechanical maintenance supervisor was approved by regents, as was the appointment of former orientation assistant Christina Moreno to assistant director of orientation.

Regents approved the following retirements: Joyce Hoffman, associate professor of management, marketing and international business, effective Dec. 31, 2008; and Thomas Martin Matthys, associate professor of theatre, and Craig A. Wood, professor of computer science, both effective Aug. 31, 2009.

Many faculty members were granted promotions in academic rank by the Board of Regents. They include the following:

In addition, Christine Hennessey was promoted to Librarian II, and Linda Reynolds was promoted to Librarian III.
