SFA art professor's work shown in Alaska and Indiana

This one-room installation from the Accumulation Series by Maki Hajikano, SFA assistant professor of art, is currently on exhibit at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art in Anchorage, Ala.

NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS - Works by Stephen F. Austin State University Assistant Professor Maki Hajikano are currently on exhibit at the International Gallery of Contemporary Art in Anchorage, Ala., and in the School of Fine Arts Gallery at Indiana University in Bloomington.

At the Alaska gallery, Hajikano's one large installation of lace-like rubber takes up an entire room. The 28 ft. by 14 ft. by 10 ft. installation is a part of her Accumulation Series and will be up through the end of June.

An earlier work in the series is a permanent installation at SFA's Early Childhood Research Center.

Hajikano's "Accumulation #1-1," a blue cast glass piece, is one of the 96 works included in "The Kinsey Institute 2010 Juried Art Show," which opened May 28 and will run through July 30.

According to the gallery's website, the exhibition explores "themes related to sex, gender, eroticism, reproduction, sexuality, romantic relationships, the politics of sex and gender, and the human figure" and offers viewers "a great way to see the enormous range of contemporary art being made about sexuality."

A member of the SFA art faculty since 2005, Hajikano teaches 3-D design, sculpture and graduate studio courses. She received both her Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the University of Oregon and was awarded a residency at the Pilchuk Glass School in Stanwood, Wash. She has also been awarded residencies at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Neb. and the John Michael Kohler Arts Center in Sheboygan, Wisc.
