NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin State University College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present the A Cappella Choir performing the group's tour concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 28, in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.
The concert will feature the program the choir will sing while touring the Houston and Bryan/College Station areas Feb. 23 through 26 for the purpose of recruiting future Lumberjack choral students, according to Tim King, director of choral activities at SFA and the choir's conductor.
"The choir will have nine concerts in three days," King said of the annual tour, adding that special attention goes into the selection of music for this recruitment effort.
"As with any of our concerts, first and foremost we want to present art music with the highest artistic standard," he said. "Secondly, we select music for the educational benefit of our students. And lastly, we want to show our audience, in this case prospective high school students, the wonderful variety in our singing and music."
The program features Ave Verum Corpus by William Byrd and Motet, Op. 29 no.2, "Create In Me A Clean Heart, O God," by Johannes Brahms, which King describes as "two of the most famous choral pieces ever written."
The choir will perform at Katy, Seven Lakes, Cinco Ranch, Langham Creek, Cypress Ranch, Cypress Falls, Montgomery and A&M Consolidated high schools. Four other high school choirs are expected to attend the Cypress Falls concert. There will also be a Sunday concert at First Methodist Church, Houston-Westchester Campus.
"We can't sing for every school in the West Houston area," King said. "So the Sunday concert at First Methodist is set as an opportunity for the high schools at which we won't be able to sing, to have an opportunity to hear us. Plus, we have put forth an effort to advertise to alums in the area."
The SFA performance of the A Cappella Choir is part of the School of Music's Concert Series. Cole Hall is located in the Tom and Peggy Wright Music Building, 2210 Alumni Drive.
Tickets are $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and $3 for students. For tickets or more information, visit www.finearts.sfasu.edu or call the SFA Fine Arts Box Office at (936) 468-6407.
