Our program combines advanced classroom instruction with intensive research training alongside expert faculty mentors. You'll master modern laboratory techniques, design controlled scientific experiments and analyze complex data sets. This deep dive into scientific methodology transforms you into a precise problem solver who can tackle urgent biological challenges.
Target your scientific focus
You may designate one of the following as your area of concentration:
- Botany
- Cellular and molecular biology
- Ecology and evolutionary biology
Or, you may choose the general biology concentration with graduate courses selected from all biological areas listed above.
Choose your capstone track
- Thesis track: Highly recommended if you want to pursue doctoral studies or secure research jobs. You must secure a faculty advisor before you apply.
- Non-thesis track: Designed if you want to increase your career opportunities through coursework without a major research project.
Applying to the biology master's program
Admission requirements
To be eligible for consideration into the program, you must:
- meet the SFA Graduate School requirements
- achieve an undergraduate 3.0 GPA or higher overall
- and 3.0 GPA in biology-related courses
- and be one of the following:
- in your final year of undergraduate work
- holding a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
- or have 95 or more semester hours of undergraduate work at SFA and be approved as an overlap student.
If you don't meet the minimum requirements, you may be admitted on a provisional basis under the guidance of the graduate studies advisor.

Is there a qualifying exam?
Yes. An oral qualifying exam is given before the start of your second semester.
