Whether you're looking to conduct original research or prepare for a career in public history, you'll work closely with dedicated faculty members who help you achieve your goals. When you graduate, you'll be prepared with a polished set of skills ready for immediate application in professional settings.
Becoming a history scholar
Complete with a thesis project, the curriculum for the Master of Arts in History will prepare you for continuing your studies at the doctoral level. You also may choose to focus on a more specialized course of study.
Want more focus on your area of study?
If you choose, you can pursue a graduate-level concentration in history education or public history.
Applying to the history master's program
Requirements for admission
To be eligible for consideration into the program, you must:
- meet the SFA Graduate School requirements
- achieve an undergraduate 2.5 GPA or higher overall and 3.0 GPA in history coursework
- and hold a completed bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited higher institution.
Ready to complete your application?
- Apply to the Graduate School.
- provide two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your talents and suitability.
- Send the following item directly to the Department of History:
- Writing sample: Five to 10 pages demonstrating analytical skill.

Priority deadlines
For priority consideration with assistantship openings, submit your completed application by the following dates:
- Feb. 1 for Fall semester enrollment.
- Oct. 1 for Spring semester enrollment.

Master of Arts in History career paths
History graduates from SFA go on to teach at the secondary and post-secondary level, pursue doctoral programs, and build careers in public history settings like archives, museums and historic preservation organizations. The analytical and research skills developed in this program are valued across government, law, nonprofit work and beyond.
