This program focuses on generalist practice. You'll learn to use prevention and intervention methods to support various groups of people. Your studies will prepare you to think critically about the challenges facing communities today. The curriculum builds on a liberal arts foundation. You will gain a deep understanding of human behavior and social environments.
This 120 credit-hour program includes professional social work courses, support discipline classes, field-practicum experiences and electives.

Path to practice
Before you can declare social work as your major, you'll begin in pre-practice status. This policy applies to all students, including new freshmen, transfer students and those changing their major. These foundational courses help ensure all students within the program are entering at the same level of standards.
Applying to the social work program
You'll begin as a pre-practice student before entering the professional social work program. This status applies to all new, transfer and major-change students. You must meet specific benchmarks to advance and officially file your degree plan:
- overall 2.25 GPA or higher at SFA
- "C" or better in specified social work, biology and English courses
- completion of college-level math
- and have nine or fewer core credit hours remaining.

Priority deadlines
SFA has rolling admissions. That means you can apply to the university anytime. Although, applying early has financial and housing benefits. Make sure to check with your specific department! Some programs need extra paperwork by a certain date to consider you for the upcoming semester.
