Dreaming about writing original music for orchestra, movies, marching band or video games? Our composition degree gives aspiring composers access to the resources, knowledge and training required to let their creativity shine. Our facilities are equipped with cutting-edge software and hardware, and our diverse and talented student body provides plenty of opportunities to have your music performed.

As a student pursuing a degree in composition, you'll frequently collaborate with other programs to score feature-length films, provide music for theatre productions, score video games and much more. We have successful alumni writing musicals in New York, scoring films in Los Angeles, creating the soundtrack for top video games and composing award-winning operas.

Our inspiring composition professors have international reputations and will help you develop and hone your compositional skills in a variety of genres and styles. They also will assist in expanding your understanding of interdisciplinary creative work by collaborating with other students, designers and artists. You'll also receive a thorough grounding in the music-creation software typically used in this field.

SFA's School of Music partners with the University of Tasmania in Hobart, Australia and through an exchange agreement there is the opportunity to study abroad. We also are very active with the International Society of Contemporary Music, allowing SFA students to attend conferences in Slovenia, Poland, Canada and South Korea.
