What can you do with a music education degree?

Our concentrations can lead to many opportunities:

  • Voice (to become a choir director)
  • Winds/Brass/Percussion (to become a band director)
  • Strings (to become an orchestra director)
  • Piano (to become any type of music teacher)

Each of these four concentrations is available either with all-level teacher certification preparation (133 credits), or without (120 credits).

SFA's Bachelor of Music in music education is uniquely designed to help you become an inspiring school music teacher.

Whether you're aiming to teach young children, or be a band director, choir director or orchestra director, our flexible and thorough curriculum will give you the specialized technical skills and knowledge to excel in your field.

If you choose to pursue the certification, your program will culminate in a final semester of student teaching in the public school system. The School of Music complies with all Texas Education Agency policies and guidelines for teacher certification preparation. All degree programs leading to teacher certification include classes that address classroom techniques idiosyncratic to music, current trends in education and techniques specific to the area of study.

Students pursuing Texas certification will gain experience in elementary and secondary music classroom settings while pursuing their music education degree.

If you prefer to not pursue teacher certification as part of your music education degree, you'll still get all the same music courses, but will be exempt from the 18 hours of professional education courses and will have some additional electives.

The SFA School of Music is as good as it gets in music education training. Our students have a near 100% placement rate and are some of the best music teachers anywhere.
