The purpose of SFA's Hazard Communication Program is to ensure SFA employees are properly trained on and aware of, the chemical hazards they may be exposed to while working at the university. SFA’s HazCom Program also fulfills the requirements of the Texas Hazard Communication Act (Chapter 502 of the Texas Health and Safety Code) and the Public Employer Community Right-to-Know Act (Chapter 506). The HazCom Act was most recently revised to adopt the Globally Harmonized System of classifying and labeling chemicals beginning in 2012. Changes to the system were fully implemented in the workplace in June 2016.

Each university department shall follow this program and maintain work areas in accordance with the established guidelines. The Hazard Communication Standard covers all employees (full-time, part-time, student employees and contract workers) who handle hazardous materials in the course of their work at the university.
