NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Friends of the Visual Arts, a community organization supporting East Texas arts and art students through fundraising, has established the Peter Andrew Art Scholarship to honor Andrew’s longtime service as an art educator, artist and dedicated supporter of the organization.
“Meaningful student support gives me true joy,” Andrew said. “Learning an SFA art scholarship is being established in my name is an honor beyond measure, and I am humbled by it. I bleed SFA Purple for the students, colleagues and alumni at this amazing campus.”
Andrew served as a professor of art at SFA from 1983 to 2025. During his tenure, he helped direct the graphic design program and served as faculty co-advisor to the American Institute of Graphic Arts and American Advertising Federation student chapters. He retired as professor emeritus of graphic design.
Andrew collaborated with the Friends of the Visual Arts to help develop the criteria for the new scholarship, which is intended to support students whose artistic practice extends beyond a single discipline.
To be eligible for the scholarship, students must:
- Be currently enrolled.
- Demonstrate interdisciplinary learning pursuits connecting their art practice with other areas such as music, theatre, dance, marketing, communication, psychology or related fields.
- Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.
- Be willing to donate a piece of artwork to one or more Friends of the Visual Arts fundraising events.
The scholarship recipient will be announced during the spring semester, with funding awarded beginning in the fall semester of fiscal year 2027. The scholarship provides a total award of $1,500 to a single student.
Andrew has been an integral part of the Friends of the Visual Arts since its inception in 1995 and has consistently supported its mission to provide financial assistance to students in SFA’s School of Art. He regularly donates artwork to the organization’s annual 12 x 12 Exhibit and Auction Fundraiser, contributing pieces that are popular highlights of the event.
Andrew was recently featured in an exhibition at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House, with proceeds from select works supporting Friends of the Visual Arts student scholarships.
