Overview

This concentration is offered within the Bachelor of Science in education program.

Understand human history

History shapes the world we inhabit today. By studying social studies, you gain the perspective to explain these connections to students who are just starting to find their place in society. This curriculum empowers you to turn your passion for the past into a meaningful career. Come develop the skills to create a classroom environment where students think critically about the forces that drive our civilization.

The concentration in middle-level grades 4-8 social studies provides the expertise to teach complex topics to middle-level learners. You will study how geography, economics and history intertwine to affect the human experience.

Throughout this track, you will examine a variety of subjects, such as:

Regional and global geography: Mapping human settlements.
Macroeconomics and microeconomics: Investigating trade and value.
Historical analysis: Interpreting past events.
Texas heritage: Connecting local stories.

Gain essential field experience

You will observe professional educators in action starting during your junior year. During your final semester, you will participate in a full-time clinical teaching assignment. This immersive experience allows you to manage a classroom and refine your unique teaching style under the guidance of experienced mentors.

SFA has rolling admissions. That means you can apply to the university anytime. Although, applying early has financial and housing benefits. Make sure to check with your specific department! Some programs need extra paperwork by a certain date to consider you for the upcoming semester.
