SFA's 60-hour accredited MA in Professional Counseling delivers all of that, preparing you to serve a diverse range of clients across the state and beyond.

A focus on clinical mental health counseling
Your curriculum will focus on core counseling theories, assessment and evidence-based interventions to help clients navigate personal and mental health challenges.
Your path to licensure
Our faculty members prepare students for licensure as professional counselors. Courses cover all academic, clinical and ethical requirements necessary for licensure. Guidance and support is available throughout the licensure application process.
Clinical experience
You’ll gain essential hands-on experience by working directly with clients through a 100-hour practicum at the SFA Counseling Clinic followed by a 600-hour internship in a professional setting.

Requirements for admission
To be eligible for consideration into the program, you must:
- meet the SFA Graduate School requirements
- achieve an undergraduate 2.8 GPA or higher in your final 60 hours of undergraduate work
- and hold a completed bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited higher institution.
Note: If you don't meet the GPA requirement but showcase a significant professional history, provisional admission may be considered.

- First, apply to the Graduate School.
- Submit the following items directly to the program coordinator:
- Autobiographical letter of application: Two-four pages typed and double-spaced.
- Why you want to pursue this degree, including any relevant life experiences.
- Your professional goals upon obtaining your master's degree in professional counseling.
- Recommendations: Submit three letters of recommendation from professional counselors.
- Each letter must also include the counselor education program recommendation form.
- Résumé and personal data form.
- Autobiographical letter of application: Two-four pages typed and double-spaced.
To complete your application, apply to the Graduate School.

Submit your completed application by the following dates:
- March 1 for Fall semester enrollment.
- Oct. 1 for Spring semester enrollment.
