You are ready to turn your passion into a career. A Bachelor of Fine Arts in theatre gives you the tools to succeed as a professional artist on stage or behind the scenes.

Prepare for graduate training or a professional role in the industry. Your training covers all aspects of theatre arts. This ensures you're ready for the demands of the professional world.

Specialized courses in your chosen area of concentration will help you hone your craft toward your dream. Depending on your career goals, you may choose course sequences that focus on acting and directing, design and technology management, or musical theatre.

Apply to SFA's theatre program

The Denard Haden School of Theatre and Dance application is a two-part process. Your acceptance into the theatre program is contingent upon successful admission to SFA. These two application processes may be completed at the same time.

All the information you need is below, or you can learn more by attending Theatre Day at SFA.

When you are ready to begin, complete the online audition application.

Required documents

Submit the following items to the Haden School of Theatre and Dance administrative office:

  • Current overall class rank, GPA, and SAT or ACT scores.
  • Résumé of theatre accomplishments.
  • Cover letter detailing your goals for your time at SFA and beyond.
  • Two letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with your work.
  • A current photograph of yourself.

Visit SFA to audition or interview

After submitting your documents, you will schedule a visit with faculty members. Your showcase format depends on your intended focus. Refer to the list below to ensure you're ready.

Actors will audition

Prepare an audition showing your range and ability. Include two contrasting selections limited to a total of three minutes or less.

Designers, technicians and stage managers present a portfolio

Your portfolio presentation should showcase your abilities in aspects of design/technical theatre. An interview will follow the portfolio presentation.

Theatre future educators will interview

Be prepared to discuss academic accomplishments and areas of interest in research. You may present a performance audition or portfolio based on area of interest. Provide a sample of your academic writing in advance.

Musical theatre actors will audition, exam and maybe dance

  • Prepare two contrasting musical theatre song cut selections, limited to a total of three minutes or less.
    • one Musical Theatre Golden Age (1930-55) piece
    • one monologue (contemporary or classical) not to exceed one minute.
  • Take the music theory placement exam.
  • If you have a dance reel, we highly encourage you to submit this as supplemental material.

Priority deadlines

For our bachelor's degree programs, we have rolling admissions. That means you can apply anytime. Although, applying early has benefits.
