SFA alumnus named chief operating officer of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University alumnus Clayton Wolf has been named the chief operating officer of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Wolf, who graduated from SFA with a Bachelor of Science in Forestry with a concentration in forest wildlife management, has a 27-year career with TPWD and previously served as the statewide wildlife division director.

“Any success I have achieved is because of my parents, all the great people around me and SFA’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture,” Wolf said.

Lumberjack leadership continues at Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary School


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary School in Nacogdoches said farewell to its principal, Tom Miller, a Stephen F. Austin State University alumnus (1980 and 1996), this year. But former BQJ assistant principal, Gerald Fonzie, another SFA alumnus (2008 and 2010), has been promoted to the role to continue the school’s legacy of Lumberjack leadership.

SFA faculty art exhibition includes show by artist Brewer


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Annual School of Art Faculty Exhibition at Stephen F. Austin State University, featuring a separate show by Jeffie Brewer, assistant professor of sculpture and drawing, opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The faculty show is an event the university community looks forward to at the beginning of each fall semester, according to John Handley, director of galleries at SFA.

Director of SFA's School of Human Sciences appointed to American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences National Accreditation Board


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Lynda Martin, director of Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences, has been appointed to the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences National Accreditation Board.

The board ensures undergraduate family and consumer sciences programs at accredited universities provide the highest quality educational experiences and prepare students for professional roles to improve the quality of life for individuals, families and communities, according the program’s website.

Martin will serve as a board member for three years.

SFA graduate student interns with the Houston Texans


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Discipline is the name of the game for Stephen F. Austin State University graduate student Jeffrey Rodriguez, who, since mid-July, has been interning as an athletic trainer with NFL team the Houston Texans.

Rodriguez, an Austin native who is a second-year graduate student in SFA’s athletic training program, is one of five U.S. students selected for the summer internship.

Rigorous Generation Jacks summer academy prepares incoming first-generation students for college


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A thrum of light chatter and crinkling snack bags filled the Academic Assistance and Resource Center on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus as 45 incoming first-generation freshmen settled into their afternoon break.

Fresh out of a training module on Microsoft’s OneDrive file sharing application — preceded by an hourlong session on dealing with stress — students of the Generation Jacks Summer Leadership Academy continued to buzz with excitement.

SFA associate professor serves as Southwest regional chair for Interior Design Educators Council


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Sally Ann Swearingen, associate professor in Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences, is serving as the Southwest regional chair for the Interior Design Educators Council, an organization that works to advance the education, scholarship and service of interior design.

“It has been a wonderful way to network and meet other educators in the field of interior design,” Swearingen said. “It has provided a way for faculty members to brainstorm and learn about common issues.”

Student Success Passport Program helps students sharpen professional skills, compete for scholarships


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Hundreds of students in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Rusche College of Business are taking part in a unique program designed to help them sharpen their professional skills while competing for scholarships.

Since its launch in October 2015, the Student Success Passport Program has hosted events ranging from career fairs to etiquette workshops aimed at introducing students to varying aspects of the professional business world.

College of Business professor named faculty athletic representative


NACOGDOCHES – Dr. Jason Reese, an associate professor of marketing in the Stephen F. Austin State University Rusche College of Business, has been named the faculty athletic representative for the Intercollegiate Athletics Council, an internal advisory group that works with the president and the director of athletics to ensure the university’s compliance with the Southland Conference and the NCAA.

Reese was appointed to the position by Dr. Scott Gordon, university president.

SFA assistant professor elected to the Texas Council on Family Relations Board


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Dr. Jennifer Newquist, assistant professor in Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences, has been elected to the Texas Council on Family Relations Board.

TxCFR promotes healthy families through a variety of resources and activities and is an affiliate of the National Council on Family Relations, which is a nonprofit multidisciplinary professional association focused on family research, practice and education, according to the council’s website.
