Beyond the shutter
The photography concentration is built for artists who see the lens as a tool for inquiry rather than just observation. In this program, we strip away the technical basics to focus entirely on the construction of visual narratives. You'll be challenged to create work that resonates in the global art market, moving beyond the technical "how-to" into the intellectual "why."
Our rigorous, faculty-led critiques are designed to sharpen your artistic voice and prepare you for the realities of gallery and institutional exhibition.
Applying to the studio art master's programs
Admission requirements
To be eligible for consideration into the School of Arts' MA or MFA program, you must:
- meet the SFA Graduate School requirements.
- and achieve a 2.5 GPA overall and 3.0 GPA in the major for clear admission.
Ready to complete your application?
- Apply to the Graduate School.
- Send the following three items directly to the School of Art:
- Your Portfolio: A collection of 20 art pieces, provided either via an online link or on a USB drive.
- Career Goals: A written statement explaining your professional objectives.
- Recommendations: Three completed recommendation forms.
