Path to certification
This 36-hour program with comprehensive exams makes you ready to earn certification from the Texas Education Agency for K-12 or community-college level history instruction. You'll complete specialized coursework in history for educators alongside rigorous professional education requirements.
If you're considering public school teaching, consider substituting six hours of graduate education courses for the six hours of electives.
Applying to the history master's program
Requirements for admission
To be eligible for consideration into the program, you must:
- meet the SFA Graduate School requirements
- achieve an undergraduate 2.5 GPA or higher overall and 3.0 GPA in history coursework
- and hold a completed bachelor's degree or equivalent from an accredited higher institution.
Ready to complete your application?
- Apply to the Graduate School.
- provide two letters of recommendation from individuals who can speak to your talents and suitability.
- Send the following item directly to the Department of History:
- Writing sample: Five to 10 pages demonstrating analytical skill.

Priority deadlines
For priority consideration with assistantship openings, submit your completed application by the following dates:
- Feb. 1 for Fall semester enrollment.
- Oct. 1 for Spring semester enrollment.
