We’ll keep you on your toes

In our dance program, you’ll enhance your knowledge and abilities in ballet, modern dance, jazz and tap dance technique, as well as choreography/dance composition, dance history, rhythmic analysis, production, theory and practice, and performance.
 
Prepare for a career in dance performance and choreography. Coursework includes ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap dance technique, world dance, improvisation and composition of dance, and dance production, among other topics. 
 
Upon completion of degree requirements, seniors will complete an undergraduate research project through the production of a choreographed concert.

The Bachelor of Science in dance is designed to prepare you to make meaningful contributions to dance in education and as an art form. 

You can use your dance training to obtain your Texas teacher certification, pursue a performing career or prepare for graduate studies in dance.

Whether you major or minor in dance, you’ll have opportunities to perform, choreograph, create and participate in technical aspects of production.

Concentrations

Concentration in performance and choreography

Prepare for a career in dance performance or choreography. Coursework includes ballet, jazz, modern dance, tap, world dance, improvisation and composition of dance and dance production, among other topics. Students also complete a choreography project.

  • Dance majors and minors are required to be enrolled in ballet, modern or jazz dance each semester while completing curriculum requirements. 
  • If students meet the degree requirements for the technique courses, then they must enroll in a zero-hour independent study technique course while completing curriculum requirements.
  • Dance majors must earn a grade of C or higher in all required major classes.
  • It is also expected that dance students participate in dance program events as either spectators, technical crew or performers.

Concentration in secondary teaching

Prepare for a rewarding career as a professional educator. Coursework, in addition to extensive dance training, includes classes in professional education.

  • Dance majors and minors are required to be enrolled in ballet, modern or jazz dance each semester while completing curriculum requirements.
  • If students meet the degree requirements for the technique courses, then they must enroll in a zero-hour independent study technique course while completing curriculum requirements.

Minors

Minor in dance

A minor in dance gives you opportunities to master and improve your technique and gain exposure to dance theory. Dance minors can perform, choreograph, create and participate in technical aspects of production.

  • If students meet the degree requirements for the technique courses, then they must enroll in a zero-hour independent study technique course while completing curriculum requirements.

Minor in dance team coaching

The dance team coaching minor is designed for students pursuing teaching certification or working in a school setting. Students gain the skills and knowledge to coach dance and spirit teams in secondary and collegiate settings.
