SFA history professor authors book about Civil War Confederate general Nathan Bedford Forrest


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Dr. Court Carney, professor in Stephen F. Austin State University’s Department of History, authored and is set to publish the book, “Reckoning with the Devil: Nathan Bedford Forrest in Myth and Memory,” which recounts Forrest’s troubled, complex legacy as a slave trader, Confederate general and prominent leader of the Ku Klux Klan. The book will be published Sept. 17 by LSU Press.

SFA’s University Series opens with ‘Shadows at Dawn’ Latin music program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts will open the 2024-25 season with an exciting program of Latin American music featuring the husband-wife team Dr. Juan Carlos and Dr. Jeana Paul-Ureña, professor and chair, respectively, in SFA’s Department of Languages, Cultures and Communication, and friends from Brazil and Costa Rica along with School of Music faculty members.

“Shadows at Dawn – An Evening of Latin American Sounds” is at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, in Turner Auditorium in the Griffith Fine Arts Building.

SFA music faculty members to present works of Sherr


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Faculty members of Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Music will present the recital “Laurence Sherr: Chamber Music for Flute” at 6 p.m. Sept. 5 in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The performance will feature Dr. Christina Guenther, flute: Debbie Berry, soprano; Dr. James Vilseck, percussion; Dr. Brad Meyer, percussion; Carlos Gaviria, bass; and Dr. Thomas Nixon, piano; with Dr. Tamey Anglley conducting. The composer will also be in attendance.

SFA’s veteran services director Colby-Lynch publishes book about her experiences in the US Marine Corps


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stesha Colby-Lynch, director of Stephen F. Austin State University’s Veterans Services, recently authored and published the book, “No One Leaves Unscathed: A Woman in the Marine Corps,” which recounts her journey beginning as a Marine dependent in her childhood to her own service, as well as her struggles as a student veteran.

SFA’s Friday Night Film Series to screen ‘Seadrift’


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of the documentary film “Seadrift” at 7 p.m. Sept. 6 at The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

Father-daughter Parrs to perform ‘The Music of Early Kelly’ in SFA recital


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University Professor Emeritus Dr. Andrew Parr and his daughter, mezzo-soprano Eva Parr, will perform “The Music of Earl Kelly” in a recital at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6 in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

The program will also feature additional works by Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, Nadia Boulanger and Lili Boulanger. Dr. Jennifer Dalmas, professor of violin in SFA’s School of Music, will join the Parrs for “Brahms Op. 91 songs for Mezzo, Piano and Viola."

SFA celebrates 4% residential occupancy increase, successful move-in weekend


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Residence Life Department and volunteers moved in more than 4,100 new and returning residents to campus this weekend, with this year's move-in featuring significant improvements that enhanced the overall experience for students and their families.
