SFA Showcase Preview to give prospective students and families a snapshot of college life


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — College-bound students and their families are invited to Stephen F. Austin State University’s Showcase Preview, a weekday open-house event to be held Oct. 10.

“We’ve designed our Showcase SFA events to give attendees an up-close and personal look at everything our campus has to offer,” said Emily Jefferson, SFA director of undergraduate recruitment. “The college search process can be intense, and SFA provides events like Showcase Preview for prospective students and their families to experience our campus in really unique ways.”

SFA researchers contribute to global pollinator data set


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s Dr. Reuber Antoniazzi, visiting professor of forest wildlife management, and SFA forestry doctoral student Tatiana Suarez Joaqui joined an impromptu cohort of more than 70 ecologists from across the globe to assemble a critical data set of pollinator and plant interactions in the safety of their own backyard during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown. 

Duo Karudan to perform music by living American composers


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Stephen F. Austin State University’s Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Duo Karudan performing a program that features works by living American composers at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26,  in Cole Concert Hall on the SFA campus.

Duo Karudan features the husband-and-wife team of SFA clarinetist Dr. Christopher Ayer, professor, and Baylor University pianist Dr. Kae Hosoda-Ayer, associate professor of piano and director of collaborative piano.

SFA alumna Salli to present saxophone recital


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Alumna Claire Salli will return to her alma mater to present a saxophone recital at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in Cole Concert Hall on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

Salli, who earned a Bachelor of Music Education in 2017, will present “The Unaccompanied Saxophone,” which features music for soprano, alto and baritone saxophone with no piano accompaniment, or other instrument, in a concert designed to “explore the unique capabilities of the saxophone including different styles, dynamics, range and extended techniques,” she said.

Stone Fort Museum to host the Fall Jamboree to kick off Nacogdoches Public Library’s Big Read program


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University’s Stone Fort Museum will host the inaugural Fall Jamboree to kick off the Nacogdoches Public Library’s Big Read program. The event will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Sept. 30 at the museum on SFA’s campus.

SFA’s Cooking Matters program kicks off its seventh season


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Cooking Matters, a six-week community nutrition program hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s School of Human Sciences, kicks off its seventh year Monday, Sept. 19.

Cooking Matters will take place from 4 to 5:30 p.m. each Monday through Oct. 24 in the Human Sciences Building North. Through the Helping Other People Eat nonprofit food pantry, which provides supplemental food to those in need, program organizers have looked for participants from underserved areas in the Nacogdoches community.

SFA ranked 11th best public university in Texas, nabs other high marks for 2023


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University received several good marks in the 2023 College Rankings issued by Niche, a market leader in data- and review-based research of schools and universities. SFA was ranked the 11th best public university in Texas; the state’s fifth best college for agricultural sciences; and eighth in the state, as well as within the top 15% nationally, for kinesiology and physical therapy.

Niche also ranked SFA’s Fraternity and Sorority Life as eighth best in Texas and the university’s history program as 12th best in the state. 

SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs to host Noche de Gala


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Those attending Noche de Gala, an annual National Hispanic Heritage Month celebration hosted by Stephen F. Austin State University’s Office of Multicultural Affairs, will get to see traditional costarricense folklorico dancing, among other performances.

Scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Sept. 22 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Plaza, the event honors Latinx and Hispanic cultures through educational activities, performances, cultural cuisines and music.

Veronica Beavers named SFA’s deputy chief diversity officer


NACOGDOCHES, Texas –– Stephen F. Austin State University and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion have named Veronica Beavers, currently the university’s Office of Multicultural Affairs director, as the inaugural deputy chief diversity officer.

“It’s an honor to serve in this position,” Beavers said. “I will assist in consulting on matters pertaining to diversity, inclusion and equity across SFA. I will also be able to implement plans and projects to uphold the university's commitment to making SFA inclusive and equitable.”

Hicks to perform piano works by British composers in SFA concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Pianist Tom Hicks will present a guest recital that features works by British composers when he performs at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, in the Music Recital Hall, Wright Music Building, on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.
