Study the traditional and the unexpected

If you love the written word, you’ve come to the right place. At SFA’s Department of English and Creative Writing, Lumberjacks have access to programs and coursework you simply won’t find anywhere else. Choose from popular electives such as the dystopian novel, the hard-boiled detective novel, fairy tales, the beat generation and satire. If creative writing is more your style, you’re in luck. SFA’s Bachelor of Fine Arts in creative writing is the only program of its kind in Texas and one of only 16 in the country.

A message from the Department Chair, Dr. Liz Tasker Davis

We have unique course offerings and exciting program opportunities available to students who love literature and writing. We ensure our students have a solid foundation in writing principles, which will be essential to the rest of their college career, and we also have comprehensive programs in literature and specialized writing. We offer degrees and minors in creative writing, English education, and technical and professional writing, allowing students to develop skills that will propel them to the forefront of career and professional advancement. Our students become teachers, editors, publishers, lawyers, songwriters, advertisement copywriters and public relations experts. Many go on to graduate programs to become college and university professors. Our faculty members are engaged in ongoing scholarship, research and creative work and, because we retain a small teacher-to-student ratio, they become important mentors to our students as they design their futures. SFA's Department of English and Creative Writing is a great program, and we're here to help.
