The School of Theatre and Dance annually holds auditions, portfolio reviews and interviews for incoming first-year and transfer students. You also must apply and be admitted to SFA. Final acceptance into the School of Theatre and Dance is contingent upon successful admission to SFA.
Results of the audition/interview process may be:
- acceptance as a theatre major with a scholarship from the School of Theatre and Dance
- acceptance with no scholarship from the School of Theatre and Dance
- provisional acceptance
- or non-acceptance as a theatre major (students admitted to the university may choose a different major).

Prior to auditioning/interviewing, you must submit certain information to the School of Theatre and Dance administrative office.
Prospective dance students
Dancers must submit a video of dance techniques before becoming a dance major or minor. Videos must contain ballet, modern and jazz techniques and styles.
Prospective theatre students
Choose one or two of the following:
- Actors
- Submit a prepared audition showing your range and ability. Include two contrasting selections limited to a total of three minutes or less.
- Designers, technicians and stage managers
- Submit a portfolio presentation showing your abilities in aspects of design/technical theatre. An interview will follow the portfolio presentation.
- Academics
- Be prepared to discuss academic accomplishments and areas of interest in research. Provide a sample of your academic writing in advance.
- Teacher certification preparation
- Be prepared to discuss academic accomplishments and areas of interest in research. You may present a performance audition or portfolio based on area of interest. Students who express an interest in teaching will have opportunities to meet with faculty in this area of study.
Audition at "Theatre Day at SFA"
A full-day immersive experience for high school seniors, Theatre Day at SFA includes:
- a tour of campus and theatre facilities
- tickets to two School of Theatre and Dance productions
- and opportunities to sit in on a class.
Theatre Day also provides the opportunity to serve as an audition for acceptance to and scholarships within the SFA School of Theatre and Dance.
