SFA student-directed play ‘Nice & Slow’ designed for young audiences


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin State University School of Theatre and Dance will present the student-directed dramedy for young audiences “Nice & Slow” by Lojo Simon at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6, in the Black Box Theatre in the Griffith Fine Arts Building, on the SFA campus.

World renowned clarinetist, pianist to perform at SFA


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Clarinetist Dr. Vanguel Tangarov and pianist Ekaterina Tangarova will present a guest recital featuring works by Carl Maria von Weber, Alamiro Giampieri, Francis Poulenc and Marin Valtchanov when the duo performs at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in Cole Concert Hall on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State University.

The program will include von Weber’s “Fantasy and Rondo,” Giampieri’s “Carnival of Venice,” Sonata by Poulenc, and Rondo by Valtchanov.

Percussionist Horey to present ‘Yin and Yang, Marimba and Drums’ concert


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Dr. Scotty Horey, instructor of percussion at the Music School of Delaware, will present “Yin and Yang, Marimba and Drums” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 3, in the Music Recital Hall, Wright Music Building, on the Stephen F. Austin State University campus.

SFA Symphony Orchestra to present Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished”


NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Franz Schubert’s Symphony No. 8, “Unfinished,” will be the main feature of a concert presented by the Stephen F. Austin State University Symphony Orchestra at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 2, in Cole Concert Hall, Wright Music Building, on the SFA campus.

The student ensemble will also perform Aaron Copland’s “Letter from Home” and Leo Delibe’s Prelude and Mazurka from the ballet “Coppelia.”

The Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by Oliver Yan, graduate assistant conductor from Hong Kong.

SFA biology students receive scholarships, awards at Texas Chapter - American Fisheries Society annual meeting


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Two graduate students from Stephen F. Austin State University's Department of Biology have been recognized for their exceptional contributions at the 2024 annual meeting of the Texas Chapter - American Fisheries Society.

Anastasia (Umstott) Simpson, a first-year graduate student advised by Dr. Carmen Montaña-Schalk, assistant professor of biology, was awarded the best oral presentation. Her groundbreaking research focuses on the examination of fish communities in East Texas rivers and streams.

SFA Sylvans win 65th annual Southern Forestry Conclave


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — The Sylvans, Stephen F. Austin State University’s timbersports team, won the 65th annual Southern Forestry Conclave, marking SFA’s sixth consecutive first-place title. 

Hosted by the University of Florida March 14-16 at Cuscowilla Nature and Retreat Center in Micanopy, Florida, the competition featured 12 other universities. SFA’s team placed first in technical events and second in physical events to earn an overall score of 289 points. 

STEM Academy students advance to state, international science and engineering fairs


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s STEM Research and Learning Center supported the development of 13 high school students to advance to the Texas Science and Engineering Fair, with hopes of advancing to the International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles.

Student-run “Axe ’Em Radio” gets new call sign, KAXM-FM


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Stephen F. Austin State University’s longstanding student-run radio station — now aptly named “Axe ’Em Radio” on 90.1 FM and operated by the Department of Mass Communication — has changed its call sign from the nearly half-century-old KSAU-FM to KAXM-FM.

The change to the call sign, which identifies a radio station, was approved by the Federal Communication Commission and put into effect March 1.

Dr. Neal Weaver officially named SFA president


NACOGDOCHES, Texas — In a special called meeting March 18, The University of Texas System Board of Regents unanimously approved Neal Weaver, PhD, as the new president of Stephen F. Austin State University. Weaver, who has served as president of Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) since 2017, will officially begin his new appointment in mid-May.
