Welcome to the Department of
English and Creative Writing

At SFA, turn your passion for English studies into a career. Study the masters and new voices of literature, express yourself through creative prose or poetry, hone your skills as a technical and professional writer. Our programs allow you to gain experience in the latest writing technologies and build proficiency in project design, teamwork and collaboration, and public speaking. Our graduates go on to teach, publish professionally, and pursue creative and analytical careers in the corporate, business, nonprofit, and entertainment sectors.

Unique Programs

English studies at SFA go far beyond "traditional" literature. You’ll have the opportunity to pursue coursework in all periods of British, World, and American literature, as well as in film studies, regional literature, digital rhetoric and professional writing, or the only Bachelor of Fine Arts in Creative Writing in Texas!

  • Undergraduate Research in English

Students Chloe Albrecht and Natalie Pradia show their poster, "Understanding AI’s Potential in Creativity and Research" as part of the Undergraduate Research Conference on April 15. The pair's project was chosen as a finalist for the College of Liberal and Applied Arts. They were sponsored by Dr. Jason McIntosh. Their research poster joined the work of undergraduate scholars from SFA’s six colleges as well as other East Texas area institutions of higher education who participated in the conference.

TRANSFORMATIVE EXPERIENCES

At SFA, we believe students benefit greatly from hands-on learning in and out of the classroom. Transformative experiences are at the core of our academic philosophy.

HUMID is SFA’s student-produced undergraduate literary magazine. Published annually, HUMID showcases works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, art and photography. HUMID provides students with a great opportunity to get published early in their writing careers.
